N.D. Tiwari to give blood sample in court June 1(Lead)
May 10th, 2011 - 2:31 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 10 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Tuesday directed octogenarian Congress leader and former Andhra Pradesh governor N.D. Tiwari to appear in person June 1 to give his blood samples in connection with a paternity suit.
Joint Registrar Deepak Garg said: “Notices had been issued to the chief medical officer (CMO) of Delhi government dispensaries in high court May 2. Accordingly, the CMO has deputed a doctor for collection of blood samples for party concerned on June 1.”
He also directed Tiwari, Rohit Shekhar, who claims to be biological son, and the latter’s mother Ujwala Sharma to be present in court to give their blood samples post lunch. Shekhar claims he was born out of the leader’s alleged relationship with his mother Ujwala.
“Formalities regarding the demand draft and other items like syringes and gloves will be brought by the parties,” said Garg.
He also noted that Shekhar had not been paid Rs.75,000 by Tiwari despite Justice Geeta Mittal’s order to do so.
Procedures to send the blood to the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD) will be decided June 1, he added.
“Regarding the cost of Rs.75,000 imposed on Tiwari by the court, which was supposed to have been paid to Shekhar by May 10, shall be paid by Tiwari within one week’s time.”
The Supreme Court had March 18 directed Tiwari to submit his blood samples for DNA profiling to decide the paternity suit.
Tiwari, who had held the posts of chief minister of undivided Uttar Pradesh and later Uttarakhand, had opposed the paternity suit. He claims he never had any physical relationship with Shekhar’s mother Ujwala, who is also a Congress activist.
Tiwari, who is in his 80s, had resigned in December 2009 as Andhra Pradesh governor in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct.
