NCPCR orders probe into Kolkata hospital crib death
December 23rd, 2011 - 9:45 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 23 (IANS) The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has ordered an investigation into the reported death of a 21-day-old infant in the state-run Calcutta Medical College and Hospital here.
The death reportedly was caused Monday after a drunken sweeper allegedly removed the baby?s oxygen mask.
?What has happened in Calcutta Medical College and Hospital is extremely untenable and unacceptable. We have ordered an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of the infant,” said NCPCR member Vinod Kumar Tikoo.
The Commission has also asked for details on departmental enquiry/criminal cognizance that has been initiated against the “erring” staff.
The baby?s grandmother Monday found a sweeper there who told her that the baby’s mask had been taken away because “too much oxygen is not good for a baby”.
The infant’s family later alleged that the sweeper was drunk and had returned to the hospital after attending a wedding.
The family had also claimed that it was “discouraged” by police from filing a written complaint.
