Naveen Kumar settles for silver in world junior boxing
July 30th, 2011 - 7:58 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Naveen Kumar settled for a silver in the AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, after losing to England’s Pat McCormack 4:8 in the final of the 50 kg category Saturday.
Naveen, who had beaten Russia’s Dzabrail Vizirkhanov, could not get into his usual rhythm against McCormack. Both boxers opened cautiously, looking to size each other. But it was the English lad who broke the shackles first and took the early advantage with a crucial one point lead after the opening round. From there, he kept building on his lead never allowing Naveen the space to make his move.
Earlier in the tournament, Sandeep Kumar (57kg) lost his semi-final bout to Aliyor Noraliev of Uzbekistan and ended the competition with a bronze.
