Naveen Kumar joins three Indians in quarters of junior world boxing

New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) India’s Naveen Kumar (50kg) advanced to the quarterfinals of the second AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Naveen beat John Nevin of Ireland 14-6.

Another Indian boxer Sandeep’s (75kg) campaign was cut short as he lost to Tilev Dimitar of Germany 14-17.

With Lalitha Prasad Polipalli (48kg), Manish Kaushik (52kg) and Sandeep Kumar (57kg) having already secured a quarterfinal berth, India now has four boxers in the last eight stage of the championship.

Naveen, who also bagged a gold medal at the 2011 President Heydar Aliyev Cup at Baku, Azerbaijan, dominated the game with his superior technique and hard hitting punches.

The reigning sub-junior national champion will now take on Malik Muradov of Azerbaijan Wednesday.
