June 5th, 2011 - 4:21 pm ICT by IANSBhopal, June 5 (IANS) The people of this Madhya Pradesh capital received an apt gift on the World Environment Day Sunday — supplies from the Narmada river that is supposed to end their water woes.
Physical Health Engineering Department (PHED) executive engineer M.M. Soni told reporters that “at 12.30 am, the Narmada water reached Misrod here, and now the water is being released for Ahmedpur intake as well”.
Earlier, June 1 was the deadline for the water to reach here.
Officials said that water from Narmada river is raw, and citizens would have to wait at least a fortnight to get potable water.
At present, the water needs of 23.68 lakh Bhopal residents are being taken care by Bada Talaab or Upper Lake and the Bhopal Municipal Corporation.
The Narmada water project has been prepared to cater to the water needs of Bhopal in 2037 when its estimated population would be 36 lakhs. Then, the city would require 340 million litre of water every day.
