Name new law minister, Pakistan court to government
April 15th, 2011 - 12:43 pm ICT by IANSIslamabad, April 15 (IANS) The Supreme Court has told the Pakistan government to name a new law minister to attend a judicial panel meeting after Babar Awan quit to argue in the retrial of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s death sentence.
The court Thursday wanted the new law minister to be named so as to attend the scheduled meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan Saturday, Dawn reported Friday.
Federal Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan Wednesday made his offer to resign in the Supreme Court during the hearing of reopening of former prime minister Z.A. Bhutto’s trial.
The minister had sought permission to argue the case. However, the court didn’t allow it, saying as he was law minister he couldn’t be permitted. Awan then presented his resignation.
An effort is on to re-examine the death sentence meted out to Bhutto who was ousted from power in a military putsch in 1977.
He was hanged two years later April 4, 1979, when the country was ruled by General Zia-ul Haq.
