New Delhi, Oct 21 (IANS) The Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC), which met after a gap of two months Friday, took stock of the different working groups under it and decided to seek public opinion on their suggestions.
The NAC could not meet for two months as Sonia Gandhi was abroad for treatment of an undisclosed ailment.
According to sources, ministry of housing and urban poverty alleviation’s secretary apprised the council of its action on seeking a central legislation on street vendors.
The NAC had suggested a law to preserve existing employment and livelihood through street vending, and providing opportunities for the future growth of employment in the growing cities while protecting the interests of the consumers, pedestrians and traffic.
The NAC had also recommended that principles of natural markets should be incorporated in the law and that minimum quantitative norms should be prescribed for the numbers of street vendors to be accommodated.
Harsh Mander, convener of the working group on urban poverty, made a presentation suggesting reforms to the Rajiv Gandhi Awas Yojana. He also presented recommendations of the working group on abolition of child labour.
Farah, joint convener of the working group on Dalit issues, suggested draft recommendations on the Scheduled Castes Sub-Plan with reference to the 12th Five Year Plan.
