Lucknow, Oct 30 (IANS) The killing of a village head’s son sparked violent protests by locals in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi district who Saturday fought pitched battles with police, damaged private vehicles and organised several road blockades, officials said.

Rajeev Pandey, the son of the head of the Aashapur village in Varanasi, some 250 km from Lucknow, was Saturday shot dead by two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants in the Sarnath area.

Police were yet to trace the assailants.

Demanding the arrest of the culprits, protesters indulged in brick batting, targeting public property and private vehicles near the accident site.

Senior officials of the police and district administration rushed to the village. It was only after their assurance that the killers would be nabbed soon that the protesters calmed down.

“Following the series of violent demonstrations, security has been strengthened in the village. The situation is tense, but it is now completely under control,” police inspector S.S. Singh told reporters in Varanasi.
