Mumbai, Aug 27 (IANS) People in Mumbai voiced happiness that the mass campaign led by Anna Hazare had forced parliament to take the first steps towards a strong anti-corruption legislation.
“Anna has achieved what the people of the country wanted and he continues to remain safe and healthy,” Andheri businessman Rajeev Jain told IANS.
Pooja Pujari, an executive with the five-star Hotel Trident Oberoi, said she was “thrilled by the victory of the people”.
“Many of us had taken out a candle light march supporting Anna’s cause last week. We are happy our individual efforts have succeeded in achieving Anna’s objectives for a strong Lokpal Bill,” Pooja told IANS.
Social worker V.P. Singh said that for the first time in decades, one man succeeded in uniting the common people on a single issue - corruption.
“It is the might of our people power that compelled the government and Lok Sabha to (act). This will send positive signals to the whole world that India is a very strong democracy,” Singh said.
Himanshu Modi, a doctor, said the government was committed to enact a strong legislation to check corruption.
Housewife Ramya Iyer, however, warned that merely enacting a bill would not end corruption.
