Mumbai, Aug 12 (IANS) As many as 23 policemen, who were injured during Saturday’s mob violence in south Mumbai, continue to be under treatment at various city hospitals while 22 were discharged during the day, an official said here Sunday.

“The condition of all the injured policemen is stable and there is no cause for concern,” the official told IANS Sunday evening.

A total of 45 policemen sustained injuries during a massive procession organised by two dozen-odd Muslim organisations to protest atrocities on community members in Assam and Myanmar.

O the 23, 11 are admitted to St. George Hospital and 10 in GT Hospital, both government run institutions, and two are undergoing treatment at the private Bombay Hospital.

The violence near Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in south Mumbai Saturday left two dead and 100 people injured, including the 45 policemen. About 100 public and private vehicles were damaged or destroyed, and the country’s commercial capital was held to ransom for several tense hours.

A majority of the injured policemen suffered head injuries due to the heavy stone pelting indulged by a section of the assailants, while others were hit in the stomach, groin and limbs.

Earlier Sunday afternoon, police booked 23 youths, slapping against them serious charges of murder, attempt to murder, molestation, stealing government weapons, mob violence, and unlawful assembly and sending them to police custody till Aug 19.

More detentions and arrests are likely to be made over the next few days, official sources said.

Peace reigned in Mumbai all through Sunday, but police continued to maintain strict vigil all over the city and surroundings, especially the minority-dominated pockets in the wake of Saturday’s incidents.
