Mumbai RJ gets PETA award for saving parrot
June 15th, 2011 - 6:54 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, June 15 (IANS) Granting a Hero to Animals award to Mumbai radio jockey (RJ) Mantra for his efforts to free a parrot entangled in electric wires, PETA appreciated his play-by-play coverage of the bird’s rescue, an official said here Wednesday.
RJ Mantra, the host of Mumbai Local on Red FM 93.5, along with his colleagues contacted the Mumbai Fire Brigade last month to report that a parrot was entangled in the electric wires outside his office.
Fire brigade officers immediately came to the Red FM office and worked tirelessly for three hours until the bird was freed unharmed.
Meanwhile, RJ Mantra provided play-by-play coverage of the firefighters’ rescue efforts, leading one listener to call in and report that he had been so moved by the story that he was inspired to rescue a koel.
“Not only did RJ Mantra and his team do everything they could to save the parrot’s life, they also made sure that Red FM’s listeners learned the importance of always stopping to help animals in distress,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA-India) chief functionary Poorva Joshipura said.
Others who have received PETA’s Hero to Animals Award include the Mumbai Fire Brigade, for their rescuing a kitten which was stuck in a tree, and TV anchor Cyrus Broacha, who refused to ride a bull on an episode of “Khatron Ke Khiladi 3″.
