Mumbai port fire toll at two
May 13th, 2011 - 9:59 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, May 13 (IANS) One more person succumbed Friday to burn injuries sustained in a fire which broke out in a chemical container in the yard at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) here two days ago, police said.
“The death toll now is two. Two more people were injured people in Wednesday’s fire at the yard at JNPT,” Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Javed Ahmed said.
The fire broke out following two blasts in the yard at the Container Freight Station in Navghar village, where hundreds of containers were kept.
“The cause of the blast is not yet known. We are looking into it,” Ahmed said.
The container reportedly belongs to Maersk Limited, but company officials declined to speak when contacted by IANS.
The JNPT is the country’s biggest port and is located in Navi Mumbai.
