London, Nov 26 (IANS) A woman motorist who smashed head-on into a minibus, leading to her baby boy’s death, was given a lenient punishment after the badly wounded driver of the other vehicle asked a court for this.

Sophie Boyeldieu, 21, was seen repeatedly swerving at 96 kmph across a carriageway into the opposite lane before the horrific crash. The baby died as she hadn’t strapped him properly, the Daily Express reported.

Boyeldieu and her partner John Grice were on a bypass near Selby town in North Yorkshire in April, when she began driving erratically. She hit a charity minibus and the volunteer driver, Desmond O’Neills, suffered multiple injuries including a broken collarbone.

Boyeldieu, however, escaped with a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years after O’Neills asked York Crown Court to show her mercy as she lost her baby boy in the accident.

In his statement, O’Neills said: “I really felt for the mother of the young boy. I hold no grudge towards her…She has paid the ultimate price and would have suffered enough. I do not think anything else should happen to her.”

Boyeldieu was also disqualified from driving for two years and must do 150 hours of unpaid work.
