Kolkata, June 14 (IANS) Veteran film director Mrinal Sen Tuesday expressed doubt over the fertility of the Singur land that is proposed to be returned to unwilling farmers, and said had the factory been allowed to be set up, it would have generated jobs.

“The land that is proposed to be returned, will it be fertile enough for farming? It is being said it is Singur’s victory, people’s victory. But I am not sure. Had Tata (Motors) been allowed to set up the (Nano car) plant, there would have been many jobs,” said Sen.

He was reacting to the Singur land bill that was passed in the West Bengal assembly Tuesday.

The bill was passed for reclaiming 997 acres of land at Singur in Hooghly district and return about 400 acres to the owners, who were forced to give up their lands during the Left Front government in 2006 for the car factory by the Tatas.

Sen was sceptical about the new government. “Singur episode is not easy to solve, what will they (Trinamool Congress) do? Tata (Motors) has been thrown out, had they been here it would have been good.”

Sen said he had been critical of the previous government too but at the same time he was also close to it.

“I am also critical about this new government. I don’t know what lies in store for this new government. They are talking a lot. Let’s see what happens. I am keeping my fingers crossed.”
