Moves afoot to readmit PMK into DPA

Chennai, Aug 24 (IANS) Concerted efforts are on to bring the PMK back into Tamil Nadu’s ruling Democratic Progressive Alliance (DPA) led by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram indicated Sunday.”There is no hard and fast rule to keep the PMK out of DPA in Tamil Nadu as it is a partner of our coalition (United Progressive Alliance) at the centre,” Chidambaram said after meeting Karunanidhi at his residence.

“We are happy the chief minister has expressed a hope to re-invite PMK… We will initiate talks with (PMK leader S.) Ramadoss,” added Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol Thirumavalavan.

The moves follow Karunanidhi’s interview to a leading English newspaper, hoping for a rapprochement with Ramadoss.

Karunanidhi and leading members of his cabinet earlier insisted on jettisoning the PMK following intemperate speeches by one of its leaders, K. Guru, who has since been jailed under the National Security Act.

Ramadoss, who said last week that his party would support a no-confidence motion by the Left against Karunanidhi in the future, was not available for comment.
