Moscow allows poll protest Dec 24
December 14th, 2011 - 11:07 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, Dec 14 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Opposition activists have been allowed to hold a rally Dec 24 to protest against alleged fraud during the Dec 4 parliamentary elections.
Ilya Ponomarev, a member of the social democratic political party A Just Russia, said on Twitter that permission had been received for the rally at Sakharov Avenue north of Moscow’s Garden Ring.
The organisers of the “Protest For Fair Elections” had submitted three possible venues to City Hall.
“City Hall said that we are not allowed to stage a rally at the Vasilyevsky Spusk and Manezhnaya Square because these sites had already been booked. We haven’t been told who has booked them,” the news website Gazeta.ru quoted Ponomarev as saying.
Last Saturday, the opposition held the biggest authorised protest in a decade at Moscow’s Bolotnaya Square that brought together tens of thousands of people demanding a re-run of the parliamentary elections.
Demonstrations against alleged electoral fraud in favor of the ruling United Russia party also took place across the country, from the European exclave of Kaliningrad to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast.
Some 7,000 people also rallied Saturday in Russia’s second city of St. Petersburg.
