New Delhi, Jan 6 (IANS) Beat policing is about to be revamped in the city, Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta said Thursday, unveiling a scheme for monthly appraisal of beat constables. To motive beat constables, the commissioner promised to assess their performance every month and said that non-performers will have to make way for others.

“I will personally meet the beat constables once in a month and will go for sudden checks,” Gupta said.

“To tackle street crimes in the city, beat police have to be on alert and it is they who have to nab criminals in the city,” Gupta said.

As the beat police interact with the common citizens, they have to be accountable for their services. “Not only them, the station house officers, assistant commissioners of police and deputy commissioners of police too have to be responsible,” said Gupta.

Talking about the reasons behind figures reflecting an increase in crime, Gupta said at the Delhi Police’s annual press conference that it was linked to police freely registering FIRs.

“You can play with crime statistics. If police stops registering cases, that does not mean there is no crime in the city. I believe in registering cases and catching culprits,” said Gupta.

Gupta revealed that 26 out of the 155 police stations, mainly in outer Delhi and southwest police districts, accounted for about 50 percent of the crimes committed in the capital.

Steps have been taken to equip these stations with more men, weapons and vehicles.

“We are identifying vulnerable areas. We are redeploying our manpower in these areas and there would be result to be seen very soon. The station house officers have been asked for daily reports,” Gupta said.
