Monchengladbach into German Cup quarters

Berlin, Dec 22 (IANS) Monchengladbach knocked out defending champions Schalke from German Cup while Holstein Kiel crushed Mainz 2-0 to enter the quarterfinals.

Schalke lost 1-3 in the hot-tempered pre-quarterfinal match that saw its Dutch star Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Jermaine Jones sent off, here Wednesday.

Monchengladbach opened the scoring through midfielder Juan Arango and doubled the lead in the 56th minute, courtesy youngster midfielder Marco Reus.

Schalke pulled one goal back to make it 1-2 in the 70th minute but it was not enough as midfielder Reus sealed the deal in the 88th minute.

In another match, Stuttgart striker Cacau booked a seat for his side in the quarterfinals with a brace. Cacau opened the scoring at the 17th minute followed by an own goal by midfielder William Kvist to equalize for Hamburg. In the 62nd minute Cacau scored his second to make it 2-1.

Hertha Berlin eliminated Kaiserslautern by thrashing them 3-1 while fourth division team Holstein Kiel astonished first division team Mainz 2-0 much to the joy of home fans at the Holstein stadium.
