Narendra ModiNew Delhi, Jan 19 (IANS) The Congress Monday lashed out at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, and accused him of working against the interests of the country. The criticism came a day after Modi ridiculed the Congress-led government’s expectations from Pakistan and the US to accept as evidence the material in the Mumbai attack case when India’s own laws did not.

“The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should reprimand him for his irresponsible statement and he should not behave as Pakistan’s advocate,” Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed told reporters here.

“We tell Pakistan to take (Ajmal) Kasab’s statement before the police as evidence and tell the US to exert pressure on Pakistan for it. But what if Pakistan and the US ask us whether India itself accepted Kasab’s statement as evidence?” Modi asked in Ahmedabad Sunday.

The Gujarat chief minister was reiterating the BJP’s stance that the proposed amendments in the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act did not have any teeth since a statement made by the accused before the police was unacceptable as evidence.
