January 31st, 2008 - 8:20 pm ICT by adminGhaziabad (Uttar Pradesh), Jan 31 (ANI): An irate mob damaged about half a dozen buses in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad District after a pedestrian youth was crushed under the wheels of a state-run bus on Wednesday.
The youth was a temporary worker in the sales tax department.
“He was going for work and walking on the road divider when his foot slipped. He fell on the road and immediately a speeding Delhi Transport Corporation bus crushed him. He died on the spot,” said Pradeep, an eyewitness.
Roads accidents have increased in the recent past in the country.
Brahm Dutt, secretary of the department of road transport and highways recently said that nearly 1.05 lakh people die in road accidents in India and it is the highest in the world.
Deaths on Indian roads now exceed casualties on Chinese roads, Dutt added.
China, on the other hand, is reported to have brought down the body count on its roads, down from 98,738 in 2005 to 89,455 in 2006. By contrast, fatalities in road accidents in India are moving up at a compounded annual growth rate of four per cent. (ANI)
