Mob clashes with police over teen’s death
November 12th, 2011 - 12:05 am ICT by IANSLucknow, Nov 11 (IANS) The death of a teenager, mowed down by a truck, sparked violence and tension as a mob fought pitched battles, damaged vehicles and blockaded roads in protest in Uttar Pradesh’s Mainpuri district Friday.
Awaneesh Kumar was crushed by the speeding truck in Kurawali town, some 200 km from Lucknow. The errant driver managed to escape after the accident.
Demanding the driver’s arrest, the mob indulged in heavy brick-batting, damaged private vehicles and even tried to set them afire. Later, police baton charged the protesters to disperse them.
“Security in Kurawali and adjoining areas has been strengthened,” police inspector S.K. Mehra told reporters in Mainpuri.
