Mob burns two men to death in football field

Guatemala City, March 1 (IANS) Two suspected criminals were burnt to death in a football field by a mob in Guatemala’s Huehuetenango province, the police said.
According to the authorities, the double killing took place Friday when some 1,000 people snatched from the police Mario Giron and Benjamin Lopez, who were arrested as they were suspected of being members of a gang that apparently engaged in extortion, EFE reported.

The police report said that the mob took the two men to a football field where they burned them alive.

Giron and Lopez had confessed to being members of a group that extorted money from local storekeepers, the report said.

In 2008, some 10 people were killed by mobs in Guatemala, according to a report by the Mutual Aid Group, an organization that keeps watch on human rights here.
