Mithun replaces Praveen in Test squad for Australia tour

Sachin Tendulkar Ahmedabad, Dec 6 (IANS) Karnataka pacer Abhimanyu Mithun has replaced injured Praveen Kumar, who is down with a fractured rib, in the 17-member Australia-bound Test squad for the four-match series starting Dec 26, the Indian cricket board announced here Monday.

Mithun, who has played four Tests, along with Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron will form India’s pace attack. Pace spearhead Zaheer Khan has been selected provisionally and will have to prove his fitness before the squad’s departure.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Sanjay Jagdale said that Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, V.V.S. Laxman, Ishant Sharma, Pragyan Ojha, Yadav and wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha, who are not part of the current ODI team against West Indies, will leave for Australia early Thursday to acclimatise to the conditions.

Evan Speechly (physiotherapist), Ramji Srinivasan (trainer), Amit Shah (massage therapist) and Raghavendra D.V.G.I. (attendant) will accompany the players to Australia.

Jaglade also said the selection committee has replaced Yadav with Irfan Pathan for the remaining two ODIs against the West Indies in Indore (Dec 8) and Chennai (Dec 11).

Irfan attracted the attention of the selectors with his performance in the Ranji Trophy, where is he is the leading wicket-taker with 21 scalps.

The Indian team for last two ODIs: Virender Sehwag (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, R. Vinay Kumar, Irfan Pathan, Varun Aaron, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Rahul Sharma, Abhimanyu Mithun.
