Minor girl allegedly gangraped in West Bengal
November 20th, 2010 - 10:26 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 20 (IANS) A case of a minor girl being allegedly raped by a group of miscreants in her school earlier this month came to light in West Bengal’s Howrah district Saturday.
The girl’s parents Saturday alleged that even though a complaint was lodged with the police on the day of the incident Nov 9, the police did not take any action against the culprits.
Additional Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Chaturvedi said one of the accused was arrested but released on bail as the medical report of the girl revealed no rape.
The girl is undergoing treatment in Kolkata Medical College and Hospital. She revealed to a team of the state women commission that a gang of 18-20 people came inside the school and assaulted two teachers, including the headmaster, and some girls.
“Later, they took one of the girl students into a classroom and locked it from inside and allegedly raped her,” Bhattacharya said.
She said there was a dispute between the school authorities and some local people over a plot of land.
The commission’s team will submit a report before the district administration, urging a probe into the matter and to provide security to the students.
“We will request them to provide all kind of security to the 16-year-old girl who was allegedly gangraped in Biki Hakola Junior High School near Panchla, after she returns home,” state Women Commission chairperson Malini Bhattacharya said.
“We have come to know that several other girls are not attending school due to fear of the miscreants. We will ask the police to provide security to the girls. We will demand stern action against the accused if they are found guilty,” she said.
The girl’s parents alleged that as the miscreants are being sheltered by the local Trinamool Congress leader, the police are not taking any legal action against them.
But Howrah Police Superintendent H.K. Kussumakar said: “I am not aware of any such incident. Every day, many such reports from the Women Commission and state government come to my office, so I would not be able to speak on this issue without going through the papers.”
