Minister threatens police officer
March 3rd, 2012 - 3:11 pm ICT by IANSPanaji, March 3 (IANS) Goa Public Works Department Minister Churchill Alemao Saturday threatened a senior police officer in front of the media when police asked his daughter-candidate to stop canvassing for votes.
The minister, a candidate from Navelim, uttered loudly in the presence of Deputy Superintendent of Police Shamba Sawant: “I will see where Sawant will be in the next election!”
The trouble erupted when his daughter Valanka, who is also contesting the election, was stopped by policemen from visiting houses and seeking votes.
“Police are doing dadagiri,” thundered Alemao in the south Goa constituency some 40 km from Panaji.
Valanka, a candidate in Benaulim, got into an altercation with Sawant. The police official finally said: “I cannot shout louder than you.”
Valanka, one of the four candidates from the Alemao family, claimed police had no right to stop her from visiting homes on the day of voting.
“This is not a fair election,” she said.
