Military strike against Iran would be a mistake: Russia
November 7th, 2011 - 11:06 pm ICT by IANSMoscow, Nov 7 (IANS) Any military strike against Iran would be a serious mistake, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Monday.
Commenting on an Israeli warning that a military operation against Tehran was becoming more likely, Lavrov said such action would be fraught with unpredictable consequences, Xinhua reported, quoting the Itar-Tass news agency.
He stressed there was no military solution to the existing conflicts.
“Military interference leads only to multiple victims. Any conflict can be solved exclusively on the basis of the principles, which were approved by the international community and the UN Charter,” the minister said.
The only way to solve Iran’s nuclear problem was to resume talks between Iran and the six world powers, including the United States, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany, he said.
Russia had proposed “constructive” solutions to Iran’s nuclear issue for more than a year and would continue to work on it, he said.
Despite Tehran’s repeated insistence on the “peaceful” nature of its nuclear program, western countries continue to raise concerns that it will use the uranium enrichment to make nuclear weapons.
Recent tensions between Iran and the West over the sensitive issue have raised concerns that the United States and Israel may consider a possible military strike on Iran’s nuclear sites.
On Saturday, Israeli President Shimon Peres warned the option was “more and more likely.”
The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to release a report on Iran’s nuclear program later this week. It may contain information on the country’s engagement in nuclear weapons.
