Mercury soars in Kashmir
June 24th, 2011 - 6:20 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, June 24 (IANS) The Kashmir Valley is witnessing a hot summer this year as the mercury continues to rise and the weather office has forecast a further increase in the maximum temperatures.
“The valley is experiencing a hot summer. We are expecting the maximum temperatures to rise further till Sunday when showers are likely to bring down the temperatures,” weather office director Sonam Lotus told IANS.
“The maximum temperature in Srinagar so far was 33.7 degrees Celsius Wednesday. The maximum ever recorded here so far is 37.8 degrees in the month of July in 1978,” he said.
“Between 2000 and 2010 the highest recorded here was 36.5 degrees in 2005 while for the rest of the years it hovered between 32 and 33 degrees,” the official added.
The maximum temperature Thursday was 31.4 degrees.
The locals claim the summer heat is hitting them hard.
“I had to go for a shoot in the Old City but given the scorching heat it is not feasible to shoot this time,” said Javaid Ahmad, a local filmmaker.
However, tourists visiting the valley are having a good time.
“It is great weather. The days are a bit difficult, but mornings and evenings are refreshing and cool,” said Sujit Kumar from Punjab visiting the valley with his family.
