Men’s hockey Olympic qualifier: Poland beat Italy

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS) Poland won their second game of the men’s hockey Olympic qualifier as they thrashed Italy 7-2 at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium here Tuesday.

Italy are still to collect their first point in the competition.

Poland were off the block with Miroslaw Juszczak scoring a penalty corner in the 6th minute and Szymon Hutek converting a penalty stroke soon after.

Italy pulled one goal back but Poland re-established their two-goal lead when Szymon Oszyjcczyk ran through the defence, dodged the Italian goalkeeper and slotted the ball in from a difficult angle.

The score see-sawed once more with Italian Daniele Malta scoring from a penalty corner. Juszczak responding in similar fashion at the other end, for a half-time score of 4-2.

Poland managed to score once more half way through the second period but had a difficult time controlling play against a very hard working Italian team.

Italy missed a golden opportunity to close the gap when Agustin Nunez failed to score from a penalty stroke.

Poland scored two more goals for the final tally of 7-2, earning their second win and a total of six points in the standings.
