New Delhi/Dhaka, Sep 4 (IANS) In a last-minute bid to finalise crucial pacts expected to be signed during Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Dhaka, National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon flew to the Bangladesh capital Sunday for the second time in a week and held talks with senior officials there.
Menon conferred with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s advisers, Gauhar Rizvi and Masihur Rehman, on the details of key pacts on border demarcation and water-sharing, highly-placed sources said.
More than a dozen pacts are expected to be signed during Manmohan Singh’s Sep 6-7 visit.
Menon also met Bangladesh water resources minister Ramesh Sen amid strong indications that a deal on sharing of Teesta river waters would be inked during Manmohan Singh’s visit.
Menon had last gone on a two-day tour to Dhaka Aug 28 and held talks with Bangladeshi leaders, including Sheikh Hasina, to firm up agreements and review preparations for what is widely seen as a historic visit that could usher in a new era in bilateral ties between the two neighbours.
