Meghalaya’s social activists condemn Hazare’s arrest
August 17th, 2011 - 1:20 am ICT by IANSShillong, Aug 16 (IANS) Social activists in Meghalaya Tuesday slammed the central government for arresting Anna Hazare, even as a women’s rights group lodged a complaint with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
“We have lodged complaint against the Delhi Police for abusing its power by arresting Anna without any provocation,” Civil Society Women’s Organisation (CSWO) Chief Agnes Kharshiing said.
“We demand that the authorities immediately grant them permission to hold their peaceful protest without imposing unreasonable condition,” Kharshiing said.
The Meghalaya People’s Human Rights Council (MPHRC) also slammed the central government for arresting Hazare.
“The arrest is a clear denial of the constitutional right to dissent and violation of the international human rights conventions,” MPHRC spokesman DDG Dympep said.
