Shillong, Apr 24 (IANS) Christians in Meghalaya Sunday joined their brethren the world over in celebrating Easter.

The cathedrals and other churches in the Christian-majority state were thronged by believers for the special mass and other celebratory events.

It was a day of coloured Easter eggs and buns all over the state.

Archbishop of Shillong Rev. Dominic Jala, presided over the Easter mass at the Grotto Chapel in the Mary Help of Christian Cathedral here.

Pascal commemoration in many parishes was marked with candlelight processions and baptism of new born children.

Leaders of various political parties greeted Christians on the occasion.

Governor R.S. Mooshahary said Easter, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, symbolises the rebirth of humanity from the evils of sins.

“In the present world of increasing violence and enmities between people and nation, Easter should inspire all to imbibe the spirit of sacrifice and forgiveness that life of Jesus Christ symbolises,” Mooshahary said.
