Medvedev again backs India’s bid for permanent UNSC seat
December 22nd, 2010 - 8:34 pm ICT by IANSMumbai, Dec 22 (IANS) Russian President Dmitry Medvedev Wednesday reiterated his support for India securing a permanent seat in the UN Security Council (UNSC), but cautioned this will not be easy as it required consensus among the world body’s members.”India, being a major state, has the right to be representated at the UNSC. However, its not easy as a consensus will be required for this. Russia will support the endeavour,” Medvedev told students at an event at the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-Bombay).
He also extended his support in countering terrorism.
“India and Russia are partners in security and defence. Protecting the country is the prerogative of India and every country,” Medvedev said.
“We will assist India to tackle terrorism if we are asked for assistance,” he added.
The event was attended by around 250 students and more than 40 faculty members.
Medvedev arrived in New Delhi early Tuesday morning on a three-day visit to India. India and Russia Tuesday inked 29 bilateral agreements, which include building advanced stealth jet fighters to increasing banking linkages and setting up a steel plant.
He also visited the Taj Mahal in Agra Wednesday, before arriving in Mumbai.
