New Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) Delhi Mayor Rajni Abbi Saturday requested Home Minister P. Chidambaram not to “succumb” to the “pressure tactics” by the Sheila Dikshit-led government to trifurcate the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
“We urged Chidambaram not to succumb to the pressure tactics of the Delhi government which is clamouring to divide the corporation as the division will not be in the interest of the capital’s residents,” Abbi told IANS after an MCD delegation led by her met the minister.
The other members of the delegation were Deputy Mayor Anil Sharma, Leader of the House Subhash Arya, Standing Committee chairman Yogendra Chandolia and Delhi BJP chief Vijender Gupta.
“We expressed our disapproval in splitting the MCD which will be against the violation of the Delhi Municipal Act 1957,” Abbi said.
She said she requested him to take any decision in the interest of the residents.
“We met the home minister at his initiative and told him about the ramifications of dividing the agency into three bodies. We also discussed the various aspects relating to the split of the civic agency,” the mayor said.
In June, the Delhi cabinet cleared a bill envisaging splitting into three smaller units the MCD, which has a majority of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
The proposal was sent to the union home ministry which sent it to the law ministry, which was reported to have communicated its approval to the former.
