MCD seeks more time to enquire on building collapse
November 20th, 2010 - 1:05 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 19 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s chief vigilance officer has sought more time to complete the enquiry into the building collapse in east Delhi four days ago, an official said Friday.
The civic body Tuesday ordered a vigilance probe a day after the illegal five-storeyed building collapsed killing 69 people and injuring 82.
The MCD also announced it would conduct a survey to identify unsafe buildings in the city as it battled allegations of laxity in allowing illegal constructions in the congested area where the collapse ocurred.
“The chief vigilance officer of MCD has asked more time to complete the enquiry keeping in view of the comprehensiveness and complexities of the issue,” MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said.
Earlier it was said that MCD would conduct an internal inquiry into the house collapse and submit a comprehensive report to the its commissioner, K.S Mehra, within four days.
“MCD’s technical team comprising of chief architect, chief engineer and three superintendent engineers visited Central Building Research Institute (CBRI), Roorkee,” Mathur added.
He also said the technical team discussed the parameters of the survey and related tasks with the CBRI director.
“MCD is likely to work under the guidance of the CBRI, whose experts are expected the visit the collapse shite shortly,” he added.
