New Delhi, June 22 (IANS) The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the largest civic body in the country, has over 80,000 safai karamcharis or street cleaners on its payrolls. It has appointed 33,658 safai karamcharis on a regular basis, 15,966 on daily wages and 31,998 temporary workers.
The wages for regular street cleaners range from Rs.2,964 to Rs.4,214 per month. Daily wage and temporary workers get Rs.130 per day.

Media reports in November last year revealed that there were 22,853 gardeners and sweepers as “ghost employees” on the MCD’s payrolls. The civic body accepted the report and termed it an administrative lapse that cost it Rs.17 crore every month.

Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney said that the figure of “ghost employees” was quoted wrongly and it was in fact much lower.

“The figures of ghost employees were quoted wrong. It is not 22,853 as mentioned, but just 2,500. The deputy commissioner of a particular zone gave a figure hurriedly, which was not verified,” the mayor told IANS.

Sawhney added that “mainly ‘D’ category employees like gardeners and environment management staff were skipping work; apart from that, our staff do their work as scheduled.”

The MCD says it has over 500 municipal dumps and 3,000 dustbins in the capital for an estimated 18 million population. The national capital’s area is 1,399.26 sq km and a population of nearly 17 million.
