Lucknow, Oct 17 (IANS) Accusing Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati of illegally sanctioning developmental funds to her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidates for campaigning during the upcoming state assembly elections, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday said it will approach the Election Commission (EC) on this.
“On the pretext of undertaking development work, the chief minister is providing funds to her party candidates so that they can use the money during the election campaign,” BJP vice-president Kalraj Mishra told reporters in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“The move being adopted by the state government stands in gross violation of the democratic norms. It’s surprising and shocking. We would soon register a complaint in this regard with the Election Commission to end the practice that is very dangerous for the democracy,” added Mishra, who is leading one of the two BJP’s Jan Swabhiman Yatra launched Thursday against alleged corruption of the BSP government.
Mishra reiterated that the BJP would not enter into any pre-poll or post-poll alliance with any political outfit for the state.
He also accused the Congress of having a tacit understanding with Mayawati government to keep BJP away from acquiring power in Uttar Pradesh.
