Mayawati hits out at Congress on FDI

Lucknow, Dec 2 (IANS) Hitting out at the Congress - and its general secretary Rahul Gandhi in particular, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Friday alleged that the party-lead United Progressive Alliance government’s nod to FDI in retail would mean death of the Indian retail business.
In a statement here, Mayawati accused the UPA government of ignoring the sentiments of the masses by failing to pay any heed to the countrywide protests against the policy that, according to her, would prove to be the biggest bane for millions of common traders across the country.
Reacting sharply to Gandhi’s remark about “corruption in Uttar Pradesh”, she said: “Obviously, the intent of the Congress ‘Yuvraj’ was to divert the attention of the people from the burning FDI issue that had even led to paralyzing of parliament proceedings over the past few days.”
Highlighting how she had sacked five of her ministers following indictment by the state Lokayukta on corruption charges, Mayawati hit out at the UPA by reminding them of the multi-billion-rupee scams that were unearthed over the recent years.
Reiterating that her government would not allow entry of FDI into any retail business in Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to roll-back his decision without further delay.
“BSP (Bahujan Samaj Party) will not only oppose the move on the floor of parliament, but would also launch a nationwide movement against FDI in case the centre refuses to withdraw the decision,” she declared.
