Mayawati expels legislator for rape attempt (Lead)

Lucknow/Muzaffarnagar, June 24 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party president Mayawati Friday expelled legislator Shahnawaz Rana from her party for an alleged attempt to rape two women from New Delhi.
A first information report (FIR) was lodged with the Muzaffarnagar police Thursday by a man named Varun Jain, who alleged that Rana had attempted to rape two women, state Principal Home Secretary Kunwar Fateh Bahadur said.
“No sooner than the preliminary investigation confirmed that the legislator was party to the incident, the chief minister took serious note of the matter and has now ordered his expulsion from the party,” he said.
Mayawati has also issued stern directives for Rana’s total boycott from all party functions with immediate effect, Bahadur added.
“The chief minister’s action was aimed at making it loud and clear that she would not tolerate any nonsense from anyone, irrespective of his association or position in the ruling party,” Bahadur pointed out.
“Since two policemen were also found to have sided with the legislator, they have also been placed under suspension,” he said.
The state police announced a reward of Rs.5,000/- each on two brothers of the Muzaffarnagar-based BSP legislator for alleged involvement in the crime. The police also conducted raids on the MLA’s house in Muzaffarnagar to track the brothers - Saddam Rana and Shahbaz Rana.
Earlier, two Delhi girls alleged molestation and attempt to rape them by the associates ruling party legislator in Muzaffarnagar. The accused included three policemen who had been provided by the state to the legislator and his politician wife.
The police said on June 21 midnight the two Delhi girls and their two friends were returning to their native place from Dehradun. When they were refuelling diesel in their Innova jeep at Himalyan Petrol Pump on Delhi-Dehradun Highway No.-58, seven people dragged the two girls from the jeep and took them to the rear side of the petrol pump in the dense jungle where they were molested and attempt made to rape them.
