Mayawati asks Uttar Pradesh cops to pull up their socks
October 1st, 2009 - 7:05 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, Oct 1 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati Thursday warned top police officials to pull up their socks and improve policing in the state, official sources said.
Issuing a series of directives after a review meeting of various wings of the police, she asked new state police chief Karmveer Singh to prepare a detailed report suggesting ways and means to bring about qualitative improvement in crime investigation.
The change at the top was effected last month in the wake of the deteriorating law and order and increasing crime incidents in the state.
Mayawati stressed on the need to make optimal use of the state’s forensic laboratory to ensure better scientific investigation.
Besides special investigation agencies, even the district police ought to make full use of modern and scientific means of investigation, a police official quoted the chief minister as saying. The official requested anonymity for it was a closed door meeting.
Mayawati felt that better coordination between various investigation wings like the criminal investigation department, vigilance, economic offences wing and special inquiries department, besides the district police, “could make a world of a difference to the quality of crime investigation”.
Having earlier approved a proposal for modernisation of the state police force, she urged the new police chief to commence the process of equipping cops with sophisticated weapons and equipment.
Calling upon the Special Task Force (STF) to remain in preparedness to meet any contingency, the chief minister has issued directions for imparting commando training to all STF men.
Expressing her displeasure at the chaotic state of traffic management in most cities, Mayawati directed the police to prepare a time-bound pilot project first in one selected area of Lucknow to improve the situation.
