New Delhi, Nov 4 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh tops the list of complaints made to the National Commission for Women (NCW), followed by Delhi, the women’s panel chief said Friday.

Out of a total of 4,680 complaints received by the NCW from August to October this year, 2,853 were from Uttar Pradesh alone, NCW chairperson Mamta Sharma said, adding that Delhi was second with 526 complaints.

Asked if the commission has taken up the issue with the state government, she said that the commission has written several letters to both states.

“We have written many letters to officials in Uttar Pradesh, but honestly, the response is not much (encouraging),” Sharma said.

For Delhi, she said that the government has replied stating that steps are being taken in this regard.

Rajasthan comes third in the list with 372 complaints in last three months, followed by Haryana with 217, and Madhya Pradesh with 139.

Of the total number of complaints, the highest were of police apathy, followed by domestic violence or matrimonial dispute.

“Some 1,119 complaints are of police apathy, and 1,105 are of domestic violence,” Sharma said.

Other complaints pertained to issues of property owned by women being taken over (326), rape (181) and complaints against in-laws (158).

The NCW is the apex national level organization of India for protecting and promoting the interests of women.
