Maximum child abuse cases from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh
November 22nd, 2010 - 6:27 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Nov 22 (IANS) The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) received 75 cases of child abuse till Oct 31. The highest number of cases were reported from Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, the Rajya Sabha was informed Monday.
Minister of Women and Child Development Krishna Tirath said the figure included cases of corporal punishment.
According to Tirath, Delhi reported 13 complaints of child abuse and seven cases of corporal punishment. Uttar Pradesh reported six cases of child abuse and 15 cases of corporal punishment.
Among those states which reported no such cases were Gujarat, Goa and Arunachal Pradesh.
Tirath said that the NCPCR has taken up serious cases, including that of Kolkata student Rouvanjit Rawla, who committed suicide after facing corporal punishment, with the authorities.
Rawla, a student of Class 8 of the La Martiniere School for Boys, committed suicide Feb 12 this year. The school principal and three other teachers were slapped with charges of abetment to suicide.
Tirath said that the government proposes to bring in a new law on the protection of children from sexual offences.
