Massive fire in Kanpur leather factory
March 9th, 2011 - 8:18 pm ICT by IANSKanpur, March 9 (IANS) Goods worth over Rs.40 lakh were destroyed as a major fire broke out in a leather factory here Wednesday, officials said. No casualties were reported.
The fire engulfed the leather factory in Jajmau area, an industrial area, following which 12 fire tenders were pressed into service.
“It was a massive fire that destroyed a major part of the factory within minutes. After battling for over three hours, we have managed to control the situation,” Chief Fire Officer Ram Darash told reporters in Kanpur, some 80 km from state capital Lucknow.
“Owing to flammable chemicals stored in the factory, the fire took an alarming proportion when it started spreading to nearby establishments,” he added.
According to officials, several workers were trapped in the factory when the fire broke out. But they were rescued by locals and the police.
Even as the exact loss was yet to be ascertained, the officials have pegged it at around Rs.40 lakh.
An electrical short-circuit is believed to have caused the accident.
