Mary Kom wins gold at ASBC Asian Cup
May 9th, 2011 - 5:07 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, May 9 (IANS) India’s MC Mary Kom defeated Asian champion Kim Myong Sim 4-3 to win the gold in the 48 kg category at the ASBC Women’s Boxing Asian Cup in Haikou, China.
Mary Kom had to work hard as her North Korean opponent put up a stiff challenge in the final. In the end though, it was the skill and experience of the five-time World champion that came through as she went on to clinch the issue.
It was Mary Kom’s first victory of the year since the bronze medal winning performance at the Asian Games in Guangzhou last year. The Manipuri boxer got the better of Filipino Kate Appari in the semifinals.
Pavitra had to settle for a silver in the 57 kg final as she lost to Tossamalee Thonalan of Thailand. Pavitra, a gold medallist at the 34th National Games, started well in the bout but the Thai boxer proved too strong for her and she eventually went down 6-11.
Earlier, Neetu (60kg), Kavita Goyat (75kg), Laxmi Padiya (81kg) and Kavita Chahal (81kg) ended the tournament with a bronze each.
