Marathon runner claimed $72,000 as ‘disability’ benefits!
October 18th, 2011 - 7:50 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Oct 18 (IANS) A woman, who acquired a whopping 46,000 pounds ($72,321) as disability benefit, is facing jail after it was discovered that she belonged to a running club and even competed in half-marathon!
Gillian Hulme, 55, enjoyed receiving 100 pounds a week after claiming she was virtually unable to walk and needed help getting dressed, the Daily Express reported.
Officials from the Department for Work and Pensions, following a tip-off, filmed her on a strenuous four-mile training run. Surveillance was conducted by investigators and DVD footage was obtained of her on the training run.
The mother-of-one, of Bentilee, a suburb in Stoke-on-Trent city, Staffordshire county, was found to have participated in a 10-km race and had finished two legs of a half-marathon relay race last year.
She was also an active member of a gym and a country club.
Hulme pleaded guilty Monday at Stoke-on-Trent crown court to failing to notify a change of circumstances under the Social Security Administrative Act between February 2000 and August 2010.
