Kolkata, Nov 12 (IANS) Soccer legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge feels Argentina’s Diego Maradona was a greater player than Brazil’s Pele. “Maradona played in various clubs outside his country. But Pele confined himself to only Brazil for almost his career. And the scenario was not that tough during Pele’s time,” Rummenigge told mediapersons on the sidelines of an event here.
Rummenigge rated the 1986 World Cup final against Maradona-led Argentina, which Germany lost 2-3, and Bayern Munich’s Champions League triumph in 2001 as the best moments of his glittering football career.
On German soccer, Rumenigge said: “After the 2006 Word Cup, things have improved in Germany, with lot of young talent coming to the scene.”
The German, twice adjudged European footballer of the year, said he supported the five-referee system on the soccer field. “It will help in reducing the number of incorrect decisions.”
Referring to his recent meeting with Maradona after the Argentinean took over as coach of his national side, Rummenigge said: “He feels players should have the extra urge that is needed to do well for the country.”
