Maoists landmine blast kills five policemen (Lead)

Raipur, Sep 4 (IANS) At least five policemen included three Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and six others injured when Maoist insurgents triggered a powerful landmine blast in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district Thursday, a senior police official said. The incident took place in a thick forested hamlet in Surguja district, some 520 km from capital Raipur, close to the Jharkhand border. The men were on a search operation on foot when the landmine went off.

“Two District Force men and three CRPF personnel were killed in a landmine ambush when they were on a search operation in a heavily forested region,” Girdhari Nayak, additional director general Maoist Operations, told IANS.

Reinforcements have been rushed to the site.

Last week, insurgents killed six CRPF men when their jeep ran over a landmine in Narayanpur district.
