Maoists’ hideout unearthed, arms seized

Kolkata, March 19 (IANS) Security forces Saturday raided a Maoists’ hideout in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district and recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition, including sophisticated firearms, police said.

The raids were conducted near Amakuli village in Binpur while the police were on the trail of a group of Maoist cadres led by Suchitra Mahato, wife of the slain leader Sashadhar Mahato, West Midnapore Additional Police Superintendent Mukesh Kumar told IANS over phone.

The rebels escaped after a gunbattle, but their hideout was located, he said.

Seven firearms, including one self-loading rifle, one set of INSAS and a carbine used by Suchitra Mahato, were recovered from their camp, Kumar added.

Police have recovered a decomposed body from Chotajammal village.

According to Kumar, the deceased was identified as Sarkar Hembram, a constable of Jhalda police station in Purulia, who was abducted by the rebels March 5.
