Maoists attack legislator’s house, blast another’s in Bihar
March 17th, 2011 - 1:51 pm ICT by IANSPatna, March 17 (IANS) Maoists attacked and ransacked a ruling Janata Dal (United)legislator’s ancestral home and blasted another’s house in Bihar’s Gaya district, police said Thursday.
Dozens of armed Maoists attacked legislator Anuj Kumar Singh’s locked house, and ransacked it. They also blew up the house of party leader Janardan Rai late Wednesday night in Bodhi Bigha village in Gaya, about 100 km from here.
“Singh’s house was locked as he and his family lives in Patna. The Maoists attacked and ransacked it,” a police official said.
Maoists surrounded Rai’s house and blew it up using dynamite. The building has been destroyed, police said.
Rai, considered close to Bihar Assembly Speaker Udai Narain Choudhary, was severely beaten and injured by the Maoists when he resisted them. “Rai was admitted to the Patna Medical College and Hospital,” police said.
Some villagers told police the Maoists shouted slogans against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and Choudhary before leaving.
Maoists had blasted a state-run school and a mobile phone tower in Gaya district early Wednesday.
The banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had Tuesday called for a 24-hour strike in Magadh division, which comprises Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, Jahanabad and Arwal districts, Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Rajvardhan Sharma said.
The strike was to protest the killing of villagers Karu Singh Bhokta and Sudama Bhuiyan in alleged staged shootouts.
Maoists Tuesday torched 10 vehicles and blasted two mobile phone towers in Gaya district, police said.
