Maoists attack CPI leader in Chhattisgarh
June 15th, 2011 - 1:26 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, June 15 (IANS) Over 100 Maoists raided the house of a prominent Communist Party of India (CPI) leader in Chhattisgarh, police said Wednesday. The leader has been admitted to a hospital after taking a bullet in his leg.
The incident took place at Berma village in Dantewada district, some 400 km south of state capital Raipur.
The victim, Mundraram Sodhi, 65, is the elder brother of former CPI legislator from Dantewada Nandaram Sodhi.
“Maoists raided Sodhi’s house, branding him a police sympathiser on Tuesday night. The rebels first thrashed him, and then shot at him,” a police officer told IANS.
Sodhi was rushed to Jagdalpur town — headquarters of Bastar region — in a critical condition.
Officials say that a local unit of the banned Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) had been upset that police search teams often stop at Sodhi’s house when they move out for combing operations in nearby forested areas, which are the hideouts of the Maoists.
CPI national executive member C.R. Bakshi said the rebels also set afire Sodhi’s tractor and other belongings.
