Maoist terror holds up construction of Chhattisgarh roads
March 19th, 2010 - 10:22 pm ICT by IANSRaipur, March 19 (IANS) Maoist terror threats have held up road laying work under a central government scheme in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, with only one road of the 50 sanctioned being completed, a minister said Friday.
“A total of 50 roads were sanctioned in Dantewada under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). But just one has been completed while construction work of the remaining 49 roads have been held up due to Maoists terror,” Panchayat Minister Ramvichar Netam told the assembly.
Dantewada is dubbed as India’s worst insurgency-hit district in the state.
Contractors hardly participate in the tender process for road projects in Dantewada. In several cases they pull out of the project after bagging the contract, Netam said in reply to a question of Congress member Kawasi Lakhma who represents Konta seat of Dantewada.
Netam told the assembly March 12 that some 300 road projects under PMGSY have been held up in the state due to Maoists’ threat.
